Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Projects
Initiated in partnership with Oxfam, four project were implemented within the period of six years from 2007 to 2013. The three projects were:
1. Urban DRR Project (2012-2013)
2. Disaster Management for Secure Future (2010-2012)
3. Awareness and Advocacy Initiatives for DM (2007-2010)
4. Awareness and Advocacy Initiatives for DM (2007-2009)
The urban DRR project was implemented in Kathmandu valley in 2012-2013. Owing to the peculiarities and complexities of urban settings and similar nature of required DRR interventions, the Urban DRR project advocated for safe city and sustainable development works. Similarly other three project focused on settings other than urban as well and covered awareness and advocacy. Some noteworthy works of these projects includes:
1. Raising general awareness on DRR (through media engagement and IEC materials):
Development and publication of wide variety of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials in the form of posters, leaflet, flip chart, calendar, flex poster, sticker and game kits etc.
2. Capacity building (policy makers and stakeholders)
Trainings and Workshops to stakeholders on DRR and CCA local (VDC & District) plan preparations, ToTs and Orientations on DRR&CCA, DRR institutional Development, Policy frameworks and landscape etc.
a) This program aimed to enhance the capacity on disaster risk management, climate change adaptation and livelihood promotion of community people and advocate to the policy makers and stakeholders for pro-people policy through campaigning and media mobilizations, production of the radio, television program, different IEC materials.
b) Television Program "Chetana" ("Awareness") on DRR: Chetana television program was awareness and advocacy based program on environment, climate change and disaster management issues launched by ECO-Nepal. Fifty four episodes of Chetana television program was developed and aired from Nepal Television.
c) Television Program "Bhukampiya Chetana" ("Earthquake Awareness"): The 'Bhukampiya Chetana' weekly television program aired from Nepal Television and Avenues Television in 2012. This program covered earthquake risk of Nepal and different aspects (community preparedness, school and hospital safety, implementation of building code, provision of open spaces in Kathmandu valley and life saving skills) of earthquake risk management.
d) Radio Program "Chetana": Considering through FM radios are effective means of knowledge dissemination and information diffusion to develop capacity of community people, especially in remote parts of the country. Using this opportunity the project developed weekly program that was regularly broadcasted for 7 years through 300 episodes from different 18 radio stations across the country. Through this program quality information, messages and knowledge on disaster management, environment, climate change and had been disseminated even in very rural and remote areas of the country.
4. Policy and Planning Support:
Support (technical and/or financial) for preparation of local disaster risk management planning guidelines for Districts and VDCs (LDRMPs, DDMP).
Support (technical and/or financial) for preparation of emergency response plans, contingency plans, early warning systems (EWS).
